Eleanor Darcy’s Lover
by and published in Edition Ten of Pomegranate
Standing to shut the rain out,
I catch sight of you,
drenched,
clutching a sodden hat
just beyond the low gate.
Blurred behind wet glass,
I want to be safe
from your wet stare.
Turning the light off,
I return to the window
to see if that will spur you to leave,
mothlike.
But you stand
still
in a torrent,
falling evening.
Can you see me
(red sweater and unbrushed hair)
or are you gazing at a blazing window
that still holds my silhouette?
