Heya folks, apologies if this is a bit of a boring one but I’m interested in how to get a pamphlet published and I wondered if any of you guys that have been published would be willing to offer some advice? I’m most curious about silly things, like how long it should ideally be, how to present it before sending off, where are the best places to approach etc. So please, if you have any inside knowledge on the process, I (and I’m sure a few others) would love to hear it! :)

Hi there :)

I’ve just had my debut pamphlet out from a great small-press called Red Squirrel;  basically I’d had things in various print magazines and decided to put together a few poems (not an actual pamphlet at this stage) and send them around a few small-presses; Red Squirrel said yes and then the journey began, which ended last October, with the publication of Every Salt Advance

So basically, my advice would be to just send around some poems to small presses, with a coversheet as well explaining where you’ve been published before and what you’re about. Perhaps email the individual publishers before to see if it is worth your while sending things; you need to make nice to them as much as possible.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other Questions, would be happy to help :)
xx

Just re-read your post

in terms of length most pamphlets are about 32 pages long, which is about 20 poems I guess, certainly no more than 30 poems

in terms of who to try just get hold of as many small-press pamphlets as possible and see whose style you like, small presses tend to have very rigid aestetics which they like to pursue so its worth your while finding one which will want to promote and publish your kind of work

Oh, there are some competitions too - I know that tall-lighthouse recently did a competition where they accepted manuscripts and published the best one as a pamphlet. And the Templar one is a big one as well - definitely worth entering! http://www.templarpoetry.co.uk/
